ActionPoint > Write Your Own Permission Slip

thumbs up

One of the things that never ceases to amaze me is how good we are at getting in our own way.

We stuff our path with all kinds of obstacles, brick walls and closed doors, and then wonder why we’re not further ahead, doing more or being more.

We’re funny like that.

So, this ActionPoint is focused on removing one of those blocks, opening one of those doors and getting out of your own way, even just a little bit.

  1. Is there something out there you really want to do or try, but haven’t allowed yourself to start? Is there a way you want to feel about something or about yourself, but don’t think you could or don’t feel like it’s within your grasp? Or, is there something you want to believe about yourself or an endeavour, but are scared of what it might mean or don’t think you’re good enough?
  2. What would happen if this thing—this action, outcome, endeavour, feeling or belief—came to pass? What would it mean to you? What would it allow you to do? Paint a picture of what would be different if this thing became real.
  3. Write yourself a permission slip for the thing you’re not allowing for yourself (from answer 1). Grab a pen and a piece of paper and complete this sentence:

    I give myself permission to…, so that I can…

  4. What would make this giving yourself permission thing easier? What would allow you to soften into it?
  5. Do it.

I know you’re busy, so there’s a really high chance that you’ll scan this post and go back to what you were doing.

But what if – what if – this was a genuine opportunity to do something great for yourself?

Without being sombre, pious or up your own butt, what if this was an opportunity to learn something about what you’re putting in your way, and maybe even clear the path ahead?

What’s on your permission slip?
